Robert Haines was wary of the weather. He had been watching the storm closely from his Memorial-area home, calling his son with updates. On the night of Aug. 27, however, he left two voice messages for his son, Kirby Haines, saying that 2 feet of water had risen inside his home. By the next morning, he couldn’t be reached by phone and the inundated neighborhood was inaccessible. A Houston Police Department dive team recovered his body in 4 feet of water in his home on Sept. 8. Haines, a twin, was raised on a farm in Alanson, Mich. He was a Vietnam veteran and grandfather who retired from his work as a financial adviser in 2011, his son said. Haines’ husband, Kyle Fredricks Haines, was not at home when the storms hit. By the time he got back, it was too late. “He was an outstanding man,” Fredricks Haines said. “I’m so glad that he was able to see gay marriage within his lifetime because we always talked about that.” Haines home photographed Thursday, Oct. 5, 2017, in Houston.( Steve Gonzales / Houston Chronicle )

PHOTOS: How Hurricane Florence stacks up against Harvey
The map compares the wind reach of Hurricane Harvey to the initial and forecast wind radii of Hurricane Florence. Yellow represents a wind value of 34 knots, or tropical storm force winds at; orange represents a wind value of 50 knots, or storm force winds; and red represents a wind value of 64 knots, or hurricane force winds, according to the National Hurricane Center.
>>> See photos that show the size and intensity of both Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Florence
Hurricane Florence has already claimed the lives of at least four people in North Carolina as the storm trudges further inland, according to the New York Times.
The storm, which made landfall earlier this morning as a Category 1 hurricane with wind speeds of around 90 mph, threatens to move further along the east coast in the days ahead.
The yellow area represents a wind value of roughly 34 mph, or tropical storm force winds. Orange represents a wind value of roughly 50 mph, or storm force winds. And red represents a wind value of 64 knots, or hurricane force winds, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Harvey dumped up to 56 inches of rain in the Houston area. The National Hurricane Center also predicts catastrophic flooding from Florence, which may bring up to 40 inches of rain in southeastern coastal North Carolina into far northeastern South Carolina.
