National Guard soldier came home from Florence work to find Charlotte home ‘ransacked’

A National Guard soldier left his Charlotte home to help with Hurricane Florence recovery efforts on the coast — but he came home Friday to find his house ‘ransacked,’ according to a GoFundMe page set up on his behalf.

Luis Ocampo, 24, is a military medic with a girlfriend and a baby, according to the GoFundMe page.

While he was away with the National Guard, someone stole laptops, a Sony PlayStation 4, a gun and other items from his home north of uptown Charlotte, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police report.

The stolen items listed in the police report were worth about $4,600, the report said.

According to the Observer’s news partner WBTV, other items were also missing from the home, including food from the family’s refrigerator.

Ocampo’s girlfriend checked on the house Thursday evening, WBTV reported, so the burglary is believed to have happened overnight.

The GoFundMe raised nearly $15,000 — triple its goal — in just one day, so donations were closed Saturday.

The Observer has reached out to the GoFundMe organizer, who wrote that she worked with Ocampo in the National Guard.
