Heavy rain, lightning moving through south Charlotte; flash flood warning in effect
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A flash flood warning is in effect for Mecklenburg, Union and York counties until 8:15 p.m. Saturday. A cluster of storms moving through south Charlotte is producing a lot of rain and lightning as well as some hail.
The cluster of storms is a strong one, with gusty winds. Additionally, there were several lightning sightings reported in south Charlotte.
According to the National Weather Service, the rainfall rates are about two inches an hour, but some areas are likely seeing higher rainfall rates. Radar shows that some spots could be getting around 3 inches of rain an hour.
The National Weather Service measured 2 inches of rain in an hour in the Ballantyne area.
As far as to hail, radar shows the hail size is somewhere between half an inch and an inch.
