Campground flooded in Rutherford County, western NC under flood warning

Rutherfordton, N.C. — Much of western North Carolina, including Rutherford County, was hit by heavy rain that caused flooding late Wednesday.

A group of people living at a campground in Rutherfordton reached out to WLOS on Thursday saying the water got so high Wednesday night that they were forced to evacuate.

A few miles away, a roof in downtown Rutherfordton collapsed due to all the heavy rain. Thankfully, the building has been vacant for years, and no one was injured.

“Someone from the courthouse called and noticed that glass had come out of the old legal grounds building,” said Chief Brandon Harrill from the Rutherfordton Fire Department. “We responded to check it out and noticed that a hole had developed in the roof from the rain.”

Wet grounds and windy conditions also brought down trees. No weather-related injuries have been reported in the area.

Parts of western North Carolina remain under a flood warning Thursday, and WLOS reports crews are on standby to respond to emergencies.

Early Wednesday, heavy amounts of rain created flooding and land slides in Polk County, resulting in rescues and evacuations. Ten people became stranded after heavy rain washed out parts of Horse Show Gap Road in Tryon, blocking their neighborhood, and roads were flooded across the county.

Counties west of the Triangle saw downed trees too, but storm damage did not compare to that in the western portion of the state.
