Hurricane Hanna downgraded to tropical storm as it pushes into South Texas
Hurricane Hanna, the first hurricane of the 2020 Atlantic season, made landfall Saturday on Padre Island, Texas, with maximum winds of 90 mph.
The Category 1 storm continued to strengthen before reaching Padre Island at 5 p.m. Saturday. Hanna made a second landfall in Kenedy County at 6:15 p.m.
Around 1 a.m. CDT on Sunday, an update from the National Hurricane Center reported that Hanna was downgraded to a tropical storm.
On Sunday, the storm is expected to produce heavy rain and dangerous flash flooding over southeast Texas and northeast Mexico, according to the National Hurricane Center.
As of 7 a.m. Sunday, Hurricane Hanna’s maximum sustained winds had dropped to 50 mph.
The hurricane continued moving at 9 mph toward the west-southwest Sunday. By 7 a.m., it was about 55 miles west of McAllen and about 110 miles east-northeast of Monterrey Mexico.

The storm is expected to bring 6 to 12 inches of rain with isolated maximum totals of 18 inches through Sunday in South Texas and into Mexico, according to the latest forecast. Rain may cause flash flooding, rapid rises in small streams and river flooding.
A few tornadoes are possible through Sunday evening in parts of the lower to middle Texas coastal plain.
In upper Texas and Louisiana coasts, 2 to 4 inches of rain is expected.

As of 7 a.m., Sunday a Tropical storm warning is in effect for:
- Cameron, Willacy, Kenedy, Brooks, Starr, Hildago and Zapata counties as wellas Laguna Madre and Gulf waters.
A storm surge warning remains in effect for:
- Costal Kennedy County.
Evacuation orders
On Friday, Kleberg County Judge Rudy Madrid had issued a voluntary evacuation order, effective immediately, for Ricardo, Riviera, Baffin Bay and Loyola Beach due to the storm’s “imminent threat.”
