Hurricane Hanna downgraded to tropical depression, winds weaken to 30 mph

Hurricane Hanna, the first hurricane of the 2020 Atlantic season, made landfall Saturday on Padre Island, Texas, with maximum winds of 90 mph. 

The Category 1 storm continued to strengthen before reaching Padre Island at 5 p.m. Saturday. Hanna made a second landfall in Kenedy County at 6:15 p.m. 

Around 4 p.m. CDT on Sunday, an update from the National Hurricane Center reported that Hanna was downgraded to a tropical depression.

On Sunday, the storm is expected to produce heavy rain and dangerous flash flooding over southeast Texas and northeastern Mexico, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Where is Hurricane Hanna?

As of 10 p.m. Sunday, Hurricane Hanna’s maximum sustained winds had dropped to 30 mph. 

The hurricane continued moving at 7 mph toward the west-southwest Sunday. By 10 p.m. it was 110 miles west-southwest of Monterrey, Mexico.

The storm is expected to bring 6 to 12 inches of rain with isolated maximum totals of 16 inches through Sunday in south Texas and into Mexico, according to the latest forecast. Rain may cause flash flooding, rapid rises in small streams and river flooding. 

A few tornadoes are possible through Sunday evening in parts of south Texas. 

Swells generated by Hanna will continue to affect much of the Texas and northeastern Mexico coasts for another day or so.

Evacuation orders

On Friday, Kleberg County Judge Rudy Madrid had issued a voluntary evacuation order, effective immediately, for Ricardo, Riviera, Baffin Bay and Loyola Beach due to the storm’s “imminent threat.”
