Corpus Christi Ship Channel South Jetty to close for hurricane repairs
The Corpus Christi Ship Channel South Jetty in Aransas Pass is expected to close April 12 for Hurricane Harvey repairs.
The jetty is anticipated to reopen on May 31, Memorial Day weekend. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District will replace sections of the jetty’s concrete cap, according to a district news release.
The South Jetty will be closed from the end of the beach to the public access area.
The goal is to complete work before Memorial Day weekend, said Belynda Kinman, operations manager for the Galveston District’s Navigation Branch.
“However, to help vacationers traveling to the Corpus Christi/Port Aransas area plan ahead for Memorial Day weekend, we wanted to make the public aware of this closure,” she said. “If the weather cooperates and we don’t run into unexpected delays, we are hoping to complete the work in time for the holiday weekend.”
The jetty was damaged when Hurricane Harvey rumbled ashore in August 2017 as a Category 4 storm.
As more work starts on the South Jetty, more closures may occur on an as-needed basis.
The overall completion date for repairs to both Jetties is expected to occur on or about Jan. 7, 2022.
