USAA donates $500,000 to Hurricane Ida volunteers with 'boots on the ground'
USAA Foundation Inc. announced a $500,000 donation to organizations aiding Louisiana in its recovery from Hurricane Ida.
The nonprofit arm of San Antonio’s insurance and financial services giant will give a total of $500,000 to Team Rubicon and the American Red Cross, organizations with volunteers that currently have “boots on the ground” to aid families affected by Hurricane Ida.
Hurricane Ida hit the Louisiana coast on August 29, flooding communities and bringing 150 mph winds that damaged homes and buildings amid the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
“Team Rubicon and American Red Cross are boots on the ground helping those impacted by Hurricane Ida and we want to be right there with them to help support as much as we can,” says Harriet Dominique, president of the USAA Foundation.
Team Rubicon will use the USAA Foundation’s funding to support its volunteers, known as the “Greyshirts,” in Hammond and Houma, Louisiana, according to a news release.
The American Red Cross already had 650 volunteers in area before Hurricane Ida made landfall, says said Marty McKellips, regional CEO of American Red Cross. McKellips says the donation will help bring food, medicine and other support to families affected by the hurricane.
Both Louisiana and Mississippi communities are still recovering from the storms, and some San Antonio organizations and businesses have stepped up to help. Here are some ways you can help locally.
