City Under Tropical Storm Warning Effective Immediately

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – The City of Corpus Christi and the City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is actively monitoring Tropical Storm Nicholas in the Gulf of Mexico as Nueces and Kleberg counties remain under a Tropical Storm Warning. Residents are encouraged to safeguard family, pets, and property.

The City is working closely with the National Weather Service (NWS). Though impacts from this system are very dependent on where it moves, the NWS forecast shows Tropical Storm Nicholas is expected to produce heavy rains and high winds along the Texas coast.

City departments remain prepared and have prepositioned barricades near the Marina, North Beach, Flour Bluff, and Las Colonias near La Volla Creek. High-water rescue vehicles also will be staged to respond to any possible emergencies. Crews have cleared storm drains and prepared several street construction sites and low line roadways which are prone to flooding.

Free sandbags will be distributed today on North Beach and the Island. The distribution sites will be:

Dolphin Park, 4703 Gulfbreeze Boulevard
Packery Channel Boat ramp, 149 Zahn Road

Today’s distribution will begin at 3:00 p.m. until the sandbags run out. People can receive a maximum of eight sandbags per vehicle. Drivers are asked to clear an area in the trunk of their vehicles for the sandbags. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, drivers and passengers should wear face masks and remain inside their cars while the sandbags are being loaded.

During inclement weather, we want our community to be safe. If you must get out in these conditions, remember:

Do not drive around barricades.
Drive slower than usual, so you have time to react to other traffic on the roadway.
Turn on your headlights, so you are visible to other vehicles and pedestrians.
Be aware of possible flooding in low–lying areas.
If you must be on the road, be aware and find an alternative route.

The Solid Waste Services Department reminds residents street flooding can turn over trash and recycling carts and asks customers to wait until morning to put out carts. Do not place them in street gutters. If necessary, place carts in the area behind the curb but not blocking the sidewalk. At this time, there are no plans to cancel trash and recycling collection schedules. All routes are expected to remain the same.

Residents are asked not to tamper with City manhole covers and should not remove covers to sewer sanitary clean-outs on their property as this could lead to storm water entering the sewer system.

The Parks and Recreation Department is removing all lifeguard stands, portable restrooms, and trash cans from the Gulf-facing beaches and bay beaches. There is a flood advisory for Gulf beaches, and residents should be aware of possible hazardous conditions. Beach Access Road 4 is now closed.

Senior Centers will open at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, September 13. Congregate meals will be available, or residents can take a meal to go. A frozen meal will also be provided to take for Tuesday, September 14, as meals will not be provided at senior centers on Tuesday.

Home Delivered Meals Program clients will receive a week’s supply of shelf–stable meals to be delivered today, September 12, instead of daily meal delivery for this week.

Corpus Christi Animal Care Services (CCACS) is prepared to respond to animals in need due to the weather. Officers will be responding to service requests for animals in standing water or in need of rescue. Call 361-826-CITY (2489) for assistance if necessary.

The City’s Customer Call Center will open today from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Residents can call 361-826-CITY (2489). The Call Center is open tomorrow under normal business hours.

The City and EOC team will continue to monitor the weather situation throughout the week.
