Tropical Storm Nicholas: Live updates on storm coverage for the Corpus Christi-area

Tropical Storm Nicholas is strengthening as it makes its way toward the Texas coast, bringing heavy rain, flooding and power outages to the Coastal Bend. 

Nicholas is now 168 miles from Port Aransas, Texas and moving North-Northwest at about 12 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service Corpus Christi.

The tropical storm’s maximum sustained winds are at 60 mph.

Tropical Storm Nicholas is forecasted to approach the Texas coast late Monday and early Tuesday, possibly at hurricane intensity if it remains over water. A hurricane water remains in effect for areas north of Port Aransas.

The National Weather Service also issued a tropical storm warning, a storm surge warning, a tropical storm water, a storm water and a flash flood watch that will remain in effect through Tuesday morning.

Residents and businesses in the Coastal Bend began to feel the effects of the storm early Monday morning as many in Corpus Christi, Rockport, and Port Aransas lost power.

11:11 a.m.: The Art Museum of South Texas announced it will be closed on Tuesday and will return to normal operations on Wednesday.

The museum staff has taken precautions to secure the building as part of its Hurricane Preparedness Plan. Employees will work remotely starting today at noon.

11 a.m.: Tropical Storm Nicholas is moving North at 12 miles per hours, according to the National Weather Service Corpus Christi’s 10 a.m. update.

Watches and warnings remain in effect for South Texas. Jim Wells and Live Oak Counties were removed from the Tropical Storm warning and Kleberg was removed from the storm surge warning.
