Flooding in NC mountains, foothills due to heavy rain

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The mountains and foothills of North Carolina will see periods of heavy rain with some reports of flash flooding across the western part of the state. 

First Warn chief meteorologist Brad Panovich expects some of that rain to move across the Charlotte metro area but the heaviest rain will likely stay to the west, including parts of Burke, McDowell and Polk counties. 

“We do have some flash flood watches extended for parts of the area,” Panovich said.

A Flash Flood Warning is in effect for parts of Burke, McDowell and Rutherford counties in North Carolina until Thursday afternoon. A Flood Watch is in effect for Ashe, Watauga, Burke and Caldwell counties until Thursday evening. 

Panovich said Thursday will be the best chance for flooding in North Carolina, as well as the highest rainfall. 

“There could be some spots across the Piedmont, but this is hit or miss,” Panovich said. “You’re either going to get a whole bunch of rain or nothing at all.”
