Texas anglers, grab those fishing poles. The City of Corpus Christi is reopening the newly renovated beloved Cole Park Pier and Plaza on Friday, December 17. Officials announced in a news release they are hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony the same day to celebrate the milestone.

Cole Park Pier has been a popular destination for residents and tourists who enjoy fishing, sightseeing, or just want to take in the view. The first Cole Park Pier was built in the 1930s and was destroyed by the 1945 Texas Hurricane. The second pier was constructed in 1971 and was closed in April 2018 due to structural deficiencies caused by Hurricane Harvey, according to the city.

A year after Harvey, in April 2019, the walkway panels connecting the pier to the shore collapsed into the bay. City staff then began working with Jacobs Engineering in December 2019 to design a pier and plaza that residents and visitors to Corpus Christi could use.

“The rededication of our beloved Cole Park Pier will be one of the most exciting days in the history of Corpus Christi,” Mayor Paulette M. Guajardo says in the release. “We will celebrate the perseverance and resiliency of our great city in rebuilding a brand new and greatly improved Cole Park Pier and unveil our new plaza.”

After the celebration, the pier will fall under normal park hours, which are open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. It is located at Cole Park, 2600 Ocean Drive in Corpus Christi, about a two-and-a-half-hour drive south of San Antonio.
