Heavy rain leads to flooding across Charlotte area
The parking lot at the Amtrak station in north Charlotte was flooded, and two lanes of I-85 in Gaston County were closed due to standing water.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Heavy rain led to flooding in some parts of the Charlotte area Wednesday morning, shutting down a street just north of Uptown Charlotte.
North Church Street was closed from 23rd Street to 28th Street due to standing water. Meteorologist Chris Mulcahy said drivers can use North Tryon Street to Matheson Street to get around the Church Street closure.
Several spots along North Tryon saw flooding, including the Amtrak station. Two cars were left stranded in the floodwaters, and several others were in a parking lot that flooded Wednesday morning. Meteorologist Chris Mulcahy said some areas saw up to 2 inches of rain during the showers.
The heavy rain also caused issues in Gaston County, with the two left lanes of Interstate 85 near Exit 22 in Lowell being closed due to standing water.
The Charlotte area is expected to see more rain throughout the day Wednesday. Forecaster Larry Sprinkle says the afternoon will be cloudy and cool with the chance for a few thunderstorms in some locations.
