'It was almost our worst nightmare': NWS assessing damage from tornadoes, storms in Texas
The National Weather Service will send out four survey teams Tuesday, March 22 to assess the damage and gather specifics on each of the tornadoes that hit Texas the day prior.
Several tornadoes touched down Monday, March 21 evening across Central Texas. Major damage and some injuries were reported near Elgin, and damage from another two tornadoes was reported in Round Rock and Hutto. Monday’s weather was a 1 in 15 or 20-year severe event for the Central Texas area, according to the NWS.
Officials said it was almost their “worst nightmare” too with tornadoes in highly populated areas during rush hour.
According to leaders in Williamson County, they have received no reports of any lives lost due to the storms. In Elgin, police said at least three people were injured, including two people inside a collapsed structure who were rescued Monday night.
The NWS teams will start in Round Rock and work toward the northeast. Teams will hit Jarrel, head to Elgin, assess near the KGRK radar by Granger and work toward the southwest. A team will also survey Seguin and work east toward Kingsbury and Stairtown.
Officials said they will delay a survey near Wimberley until Wednesday, March 23 due to a potential tornado.
NWS hopes to have a preliminary event report out by the late afternoon on Tuesday.
