National Weather Service confirms an EF-1 tornado in Alexander County
Damage from a tornado in Alexander County was confirmed by the National Weather Service on Friday. The storm occurred Wednesday night.
ALEXANDER COUNTY, N.C. — The National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado touched down the evening of Wednesday, March 23, 2022, in Alexander County near Taylorsville.
The WCNC Weather team was out with Alexander County Emergency Management while the NWS was doing their survey. The tornado is estimated as an EF-1 with wind speeds up to 110 mph, a path length of 6 miles, and a width of 150 yards.
Additional information will be available later today. Our team noticed many downed trees, a tree that fell on a home, shingles missing from roofs and tiles missing from carports, and more during the survey.
Original story:
Based on pictures and videos sent to WCNC Charlotte Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich and data he gathered, it looks very likely that a tornado touched down in Alexander County Wednesday night.
The damage occurred along Mount Olive Church Road around 11 p.m., just north of Ellendale. There seems to be a clear damage path as well as a few mobile homes damaged, too. Tiles were also missing from a few roofs with multiple tree limbs and branches down.
WCNC Charlotte also received separate pictures and a video from a viewer who lives along Mt. Olive Church Road.
Right now, it’s just a suspected tornado as there has been no official confirmation from the National Weather Service. We should get that data on Friday.
