Rumor control: Will the wildfires delay the Wings Over South Texas Air Show?
With a wildfires burning up to 60,000 acres and prompting voluntary evacuation notices, some residents are concerned the Wings Over South Texas Air Show will be canceled or delayed.
Rod Hafemeister, assistant public affairs officer at Naval Air Station Kingsville, said the show is still set to reach the skies.
“We are monitoring it, but the wind is going in the other direction and its moving the fires further and further away every hour,” Hafemeister said. “We’re not expecting any delays, but if anything were to happen we’d post about it on our website and social media pages.”
The Borrega Fire began at King Ranch in Kleberg County Wednesday night. It burned through 60,000 acres and was 20% contained by Thursday morning; as of Thursday night, it was reduced to 46,000 acres and was 50% contained, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service. Residents in Ricardo and Riviera were urged to voluntarily evacuate, and the fire crossed into Brooks County.
The air show will feature the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels, a parachute jump by the U.S. Army’s Silver Wings Jump Team and World Aerobatics Champion Rob Holland in the air as well.
Entrance to NAS Kingsville will be through the main gate on Gen. Cavazos Boulevard. Gates will open to the public at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday and the Air Show will start at noon, with the Blue Angels scheduled to perform at 3 p.m.
The Blue Angels team will sign autographs after the show until about 5 p.m.
