Severe weather causes floodwaters to drown cars, block roads and cut off neighborhoods in Chapel Hill
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Severe weather has caused floodwaters to drown cars, block roads and cut off neighborhoods in Chapel Hill Friday evening.
Residents are seeing the weather flood out the area, leaving roads like Cleland Drive completely submerged under water after two hours of rain.
This makes the area hazardous for driving conditions and has several closed roads.
Like Charles Johnson, residents of South Estes Apartments have been dealing with rushing waters and have been left stranded.
“I live in the back, so I can’t get out,” Johnson said. “It is still raining, so it’ll keep going.”
Johnson buildings cut off from the exit to N Fordham Blvd by flooding and he says this has happened before, but it is still an impressive sight.
Chapel Hill firefighters happened to be nearby and could get the driver out, but the car stayed stuck, marooned in water that witnesses said was up to two feet deep.
Also, on Umstead Drive, the damage continued into the night.
Crews are working to fix power lines snagged by a falling tree.
The outage left nearly 400 customers in the dark as cleanup continues, and several roads, including Cleland, remain shut.
These floodwaters are going, but not gone, just yet.
