A tornado watch has been issued and is in effect until 11 p.m. for counties west of San Antonio, the National Weather Service announced Friday, June 2. The areas subject to the watch are Edwards, Kinney, Real, Uvalde, and Val Verde counties.

There are “favorable” conditions for multiple severe weather impacts, with large hail and damaging winds posing the greatest concern, a news release from NWS reported. Hail up to 3 inches and winds of up to 75 mph are possible.

The threat of one to two tornadoes exists due to surrounding weather conditions.

On Thursday, June 1, heavy rainfall slammed parts of West Texas resulting in severe flooding and road closures, according to video shared by KENS5. Now another wave of storms and rain are heading toward some of the north and southeastern portions of South-Central Texas this weekend, according to a National Weather Service report.

Chances for thunderstorms begin Friday, June 2, and will continue through next week. While there is a level 3 out of 4 risk for severe weather over parts of Val Verde, Edwards Counties, and the Rio Grande Plains, there is a possibility storms could extend east into parts of the Texas Hill Country on Friday afternoon and evening, according to the report.

Weather experts predict local heavy rainfall this weekend and late into next week for most of South-Central Texas with the potential for flooding. However, they have low confidence where the heaviest amounts of rainfall are expected, according to the report.

The forecasted thunderstorms have the possibility of producing large hail over 2 inches, along with damaging winds and isolated tornadoes, but rainfall and hail remain the primary threats, according to the report. NWS says the highest probability for storms with heavy rainfall to strike the area will be on Saturday, June 3, and Sunday, June 4.

Bexar County holds a slight chance of showers beginning Saturday night with low temperatures in the 60s. On Sunday, residents can prepare for more chances of thunderstorms with a 40% chance for rain during the day and at night, according to the NWS zone forecast.

There is a higher chance for rain on Monday, June 5, with chances for showers and thunderstorms to continue over night and into the next day. Residents could also see a few more showers and storms on Wednesday and Thursday, which holds a 30% chance for rain.
