Texas beaches close for driving, camping ahead of Tropical Storm Harold

Texas beaches are taking action with closures as Tropical Storm Harold moves into South Texas on Tuesday, August 22.

A Tropical Storm Warning and Coastal Flood Warning have been issued by the National Weather Service Corpus Christi for Padre Island National Seashore and surrounding areas. Winds are anticipated to be 40 to 50 miles per hour with gusts to 60 to 70 miles per hour, according to the NWS.
In anticipation of the weather, Padre Island National Seashore closed South Beach and North Beach for driving and camping until further notice, according to a Facebook post on Monday, August 21. Officials have also delayed opening the Malaquite Visitor Center on Tuesday. The visitor center will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Officials with the City of Port Aransas also issued an emergency order to close Port Aransas beaches to overnight camping effective immediately on Monday to Wednesday, August 23, from 7 p.m. through 7 a.m.
South Padre Island officials have removed all equipment from the beaches due to the weather, according to a news release on Monday. Officials said there are a few models that continue to show the weather disturbance heading north of the island. Localized flooding and power outages are expected.
