Outer Banks flooding and overwash closes NC 12, ferry on Ocracoke Island

A coastal North Carolina highway will stay closed for the rest of the week.
The Department of Transportation said N.C. Highway 12 on Ocracoke Island will stay closed until at least noon on Saturday.
This past weekend’s stormy weather closed the highway from the National Park Service Pony Pens to the ferry terminal at the north end of the island. Sand and overwash on the road continue to be a problem, according to the Department of Transportation.
Ferry service between Ocracoke Island and Hatteras Island has also been impacted by the road closure. Drivers should take an alternate route.
