Low risk of damaging winds, hail from Saturday storms

While most of Saturday’s storms are not expected to be severe, there’s a low chance the storms could produce elevated threats.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The WCNC Charlotte Weather Team wants you to be Weather Aware on Saturday because of a low chance damaging winds or small-to-medium sized hail.

Throughout the weekend, scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast in both North Carolina and South Carolina. Between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Saturday, a few of the scattered storms have a low chance of producing hail and gusty, damaging winds. Lightning is also possible with any of the storms throughout the weekend.

While the chances are low, the impact damaging wind exists for all communities including Hickory, Shelby, Charlotte, Salisbury, Monroe, Concord, Lancaster, Rock Hill, Fort Mill, Boone, Blowing Rock and surrounding areas.

Tornadoes are not forecast to be an impact from storms around Charlotte this weekend. Most of the tornado threat is farther south in southern Georgia and northern Florida.

With hail, damaging winds or tornadoes are required to meet the technical definition of severe weather, lightning chances throughout the week can still pose a risk to outdoor activities. Those attending outdoor activities, including sporting events, should be prepared to seek shelter if lightning strikes near the event.

The quickest and easiest way to remember what to do: when thunder roars, move indoors!
