Some Southeast Texas announce closures in anticipation of Tropical Storm Beryl

HOUSTON — As Tropical Storm Beryl approaches the Texas coast and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane, some schools are already taking action.

Beryl is expected to make landfall somewhere along the Texas coast early Monday morning as a Cat. 1 storm. The forecast cone extends to include parts of Southeast Texas and Matagorda Bay. The storm is expected to bring several inches of rain to the Greater Houston area.

A Storm Surge Watch has also been issued for much of the Texas coastline.

Friday afternoon, University of Houston’s Victoria campus announced it has canceled classes Monday in anticipation of the storm.

“This closure is out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and faculty,” the school wrote in an alert.

The school said it intends to give an update on its status Monday afternoon.

Additionally, Brazosport College in Lake Jackson is canceling all classes and operations Monday. The school said that includes the Bill & Julia May Children’s Center.

“We encourage everyone to take precautions and prepare for the potential heavy winds and rain that may impact our area,” the school said in its announcement of the closure.

Brazosport College said it will post more updates on its website and social media pages.
