Weather Impact Alert Days | Heavy rain and minor flooding possible Monday through Wednesday

An unusual July weather pattern will bring multiple days of rain chances and the risk for minor flooding across Central Texas. Here’s what you need to know.
AUSTIN, Texas — The month of July is not typically a month we turn to for beneficial rain here in Central Texas. On average, the month of July is the second driest month of the year, and last July brought just 0.04 inches of rain to Austin. Fortunately, this July is bringing us a treat.
Much of Central Texas picked up at least a half-inch of rain on Thursday morning, and we likely have much more rain on the way for next week, especially on Monday through Wednesday. As a bonus, the much higher rain chances will bring a substantial drop in temperatures. We don’t get many July afternoons with high temperatures in the 80s, but that could very well be the case for multiple days next week.
Ahead of the risk for locally heavy rain and minor flooding, the KVUE Weather Team has issued Weather Impact Alert Days for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. During this time frame be sure to check in frequently with the forecast, and be mindful if driving in heavy rain. As always, remember turn around don’t drown!

Things start to change on Sunday, and then a much stronger disturbance brings our highest rain chances in a while for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
The current forecast calls for multiple rounds of potentially heavy rainfall, with a 70% to 80% rain chance through the first half of next week.

Our confidence in widespread rainfall is increasing, but we will need to see exactly how the pieces all come together.
The preliminary long-range data is showing rain chances initially ramping up through Monday afternoon and evening.

As confidence is increasing, so are the seven-day rain chances. We’re now expecting a widespread 2 to 4 inches of rain for most of our KVUE area over the next seven days, with the majority of the rain falling Monday through Wednesday.
Remember, these totals are in addition to the 0.5 inches to 3 inches that fell on Thursday morning.

Of course we badly need the rain, but we’ll also have to keep an eye on the flooding potential for both Monday and Tuesday.
The current Excessive Rainfall Outlook from the Weather Prediction Center includes all of the KVUE area in the level 2 of 4 flood threat for Monday and Tuesday before shifting east of Interstate Highway 35 for Wednesday.

Even after Tuesday, scattered rain remains in the forecast through the middle and end of next week. In addition to the rain, a very welcome drop in temperature is also in the forecast, with highs most of next week in the upper 80s and low 90s.
The KVUE Weather Team will continue to closely monitor this developing forecast.
In the meantime, the extended forecast can be found below:
