Man injured when tree falls, homes damaged in Raleigh and Garner during storms

Rain poured in a Garner family’s home on Monday just a few days after a tree fell on their roof over the weekend.

Crews spent hours on Monday removing a poplar tree from the roof of a townhouse near North Hills. Across the Triangle, crews were cleaning up other damage after storms with strong winds and rain knocked down trees across the Triangle over the weekend and on Monday.

A tree fell early Monday on Brandywine Road near Trinity Road in Raleigh, close to PNC Arena, knocking down powerlines. Another tree fell overnight on Dunn Road off of Falls of Neuse Road, blocking the road entirely.

WRAL News spoke to the crews repairing the roof of a townhouse in the Lynwood Park community near North Hills, where another tree fell.

A spokesperson with J & D Tree Pros told WRAL News the saturated ground from recent rain coupled with the storms likely caused the tree to fall. Luckily, no one was injured.

The severe weather made a difficult situation even worse for a Garner family after a massive tree fell on their home on Edgebrook Drive over the weekend.

The tree came down on Gayle Wheeler’s home Saturday morning.

“All of sudden we heard this big boom … and we looked and the tree was falling on the house,” Wheeler recalled.

Wheeler said rain poured inside her home Monday from to the hole in her roof.

“It was soaked here … I had to rearrange everything in the kitchen,” she said.

Despite the damage, Wheeler is breathing a sigh of relief that no was hurt.

“Things can be replaced. People can’t,” she said.

Wheeler told WRAL News the exact cost to repair the damage is unknown, but removing the tree will cost the family $4,000.

In Charlotte, one person was killed Monday morning when a tree crashed through an apartment building, neighbors said. In Rolesville in Wake County, a worker removing a tree was injured when a tree fell on him and the equipment.

WRAL News is working to learn the condition of the worker who was injured.
