Wilson County middle school welcomes back students weeks after EF-3 tornado
Students at Springfield Middle School are back in the classroom weeks after an EF-3 tornado damaged the school.
Many parents are glad to know their students can return to Springfield Middle School after much uncertainty.
“I am just happy it played out like we envisioned it,” Jessica Lewis said.
Lewis’ son began 7th grade Monday at the middle school.
She’s been watching the progress at the school for several weeks, calling it a true community effort to repair it.
“Seeing this small community come together to lift up this school, I’m sure it’s going to be a good year for both students and teachers; I am sure they will create a bond,” Lewis said.
Heather Robinson, the parent of another 7th grader, has looked forward to this day for many months.
“I came in here when the school just got built. I was in the first 7th grade class. Me and my son get to share a special moment,” Robinson said.
During a special board meeting earlier this month, Wilson County Schools leaders agreed that classes would be able to resume in the building on Aug. 26., despite the massive damage to the 6th and 7th grade wings.
The Wilson County Board of Education voted unanimously to approve a disaster fund for restoration that will be at most $2.38 million.
Board members said insurance will cover some, if not all, expenses.
Robinson was able to tour the school last week. She said the progress is astounding.
“It’s amazing to see what it looked like just a few weeks ago to now,” she said. “They’ve worked really hard to get the kids back.”
Robinson and Lewis are glad their boys get to start the year together in the building they planned to.
“That’s where they need to be, together. Especially after this,” Robinson said.
