‘Hasn’t been this bad since Florence’: Myrtle Grove residents respond to Monday’s storm damage

NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WWAY) — Many in Myrtle Grove describe today’s storm as one of the most violent they’ve encountered.

As the storm brought several inches of rain to New Hanover County in just a few hours, it led to severe flooding, road closures, and damage to homes.

Randy Ridgeway, a resident of Myrtle Grove, recounted the moment when a tree crashed through his roof.

“There was lightning, and the wind was blowing so hard you wouldn’t believe it. Then suddenly, I heard this cracking sound. I haven’t seen it this flooded since Florence,” Ridgeway said.

Other residents are also grappling with the aftermath.

An 80-year-old woman described the difficult situation she faces: “It’s terrible—water is all over the porch, it’s everywhere. It’s been tough. I’ve been here since ’63, and this is the worst part of it. The whole situation is just difficult.”

Despite the challenges, the community is rallying together.

Neighbors are working tirelessly to clear blocked drainage and assist those in need.

One local remarked, “We usually check on everyone else. We have a vehicle that can get through anything. Some people are in worse shape than others. A tornado could take out one house and leave the rest of us alone. We have to be part of the community and take care of it.”

Residents said that they hope insurance inspectors will arrive tomorrow to assess the damage.
