CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Carolina Beach experienced extreme flooding Monday with more than 20 inches of rainfall.

Portions of Lake Park Boulevard and Fayetteville Avenue remain flooded, although the water is going down.

One resident told WWAY at one point, he had 4 feet of water inside his house, which is just down the street from Carolina Beach Lake.

Carolina Beach Mayor Lynn Barbee said some areas of town experienced flooding for the first time ever, which was surprising given the slow-moving tropical weather system never received a name.

“I’ve spoken to a number of residents who have been here their entire lives in my same age demographic and I think its pretty unanimous that we have never seen flooding like this, especially from an un-named storm,” Barbee said. “But I can think back to some of our major hurricanes and we did not have this level of flooding.”

Barbee said he spoke with the NC Emergency Management about coming up with new ways to properly warn the public about un-named storms that could end up worse than expected.
