Temperature inversion traps wildfire smoke, cooler and drier air mixes in overnight

It’ll be a chillier start to the day Tuesday but still a picture-perfect fall day!

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

This Evening & Overnight

Cooler and drier air filters in overnight allowing for lows to drop to the upper 40s. Winds will be breezy at times for the mountains but light for most of the piedmont. Fog is not likely.

We may see hazy sky conditions, however, due to wildfires to our north in parts of the Midwest. The smoke is picked up by the jet stream and carried down to the Carolinas. A temperature inversion is trapping it for now but it’ll likely dissipate by Tuesday afternoon.

Rest of the Week

We’re sunny with a nice fall-like day tomorrow as highs reach the mid-upper 60s! The coldest night over the next week is Wednesday morning where lows will plummet to the upper 30s. Wednesday afternoon, highs will struggle to reach the 60-degree mark.

Our next best chance for rain arrives on Thursday. Unfortunately, it’ll be a chilly, cold rain as highs only reach the low 50s. It’ll be a true wedge set up with off-and-on rain and widespread cloud cover.

End of the Week

We’ll return to a more “normal” pattern by late this week. Although, temperatures will likely still be above average! But at least the sun will shine.
