1 killed, 4 injured in tornado-warned storm in Brazoria County
There was widespread damage all across Brazoria County. A school was damaged, houses were destroyed and one person was killed.
LIVERPOOL, Texas — One person was killed and four people were injured in a tornado-warned storm in Brazoria County Saturday.
The Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office said a tornado touched down between Liverpool and Hillcrest Village. Ten homes were destroyed by the storm. A day care center and Wald Disney Elementary School on Mustang Road near Alvin were also damaged. At least eight power lines were down.
According to Manvel Mayor Dan Davis, one adult was killed in the county and four others were injured. We’re told the four people who were injured suffered injuries that are not life-threatening. At this point, we don’t know the exact location of that fatality and the injuries.
KHOU 11 reporter Orka Manna surveyed damage around Brazoria County.
In one area off Highway 35 near County Road 191, one homeowner told us her fifth-wheel trailer, which was secured, blew off her property and was destroyed while she was hunkering down inside her home.
“I heard the back door flew open and I told my husband, ‘Run’ and we hid in the closet with our puppies,” resident Anna Peterson said. “About two or three minutes later, it was over and then we opened the front door to see and it was all gone.”
The strong wind not only destroyed it, but it also blew it to the property next door.
Rebecca Ray with the SMART Center Day Care said she’s never seen this much damage.
“Lots of broken windows,” she said. “There is some damage to the building itself and we’re just waiting for people to come and assess.”
Madison Polston with the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office said the tornado damaged was mostly from the north end of County Road 191 in the Liverpool area down to Highway 35 to the Hillcrest Village are near Alvin.
Polston said crews are going to continue searching through the damaged.
“Though there were multiple touchdown points, they were relatively small in geographical area,” she said. “So the secondary searches are really to confirm that everyone is accounted for.”
