Former San Antonio Spur Kawhi Leonard's home likely destroyed in California wildfires
Former San Antonio Spur Kawhi Leonard’s LA-area home has likely been destroyed by the flames of the Pacific Palisades Fire, the Daily Mail reports.
The NBA player hasn’t confirmed that he lost his $17 million residence in the blaze. However, the house in Pacific Palisades, which he purchased in 2021, is within the fire perimeter, according to data accessed by the British paper.
Leonard, who’s only played two games for the Clippers this season due to a lingering knee injury, reportedly headed back to LA before his team’s matchup against the Denver Nuggets to be with his family, who were forced to evacuate.
“You definitely have to take care of home … . Totally had my support 100%,” Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue told reporters before the game. “Going back, checking on his family and kids, making sure they’re well. And he got back, and they’re doing OK, so just happy and thankful for that.”
The childhood home of Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, who won two NBA championships as Spur in 1999 and 2003, also burned in the fires now ravaging Southern California, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Kerr’s mother still lived at the house but managed to evacuate in time, according to the report.
The Pacific Palisades Fire and four other nearby infernos have killed at least five people. The Pacific Palisades Fire alone has scorched nearly 27 square miles of Southern California, destroying at least 1,000 structures as of press time, according to the latest figures from NBC News.
Leonard played for the Spurs for seven seasons, even winning the 2014 NBA Finals MVP award in a Silver and Black uniform. However, he demanded a trade in 2018, alleging that Hall of Fame coach Gregg Popovich mishandled Leonard’s knee injury.
Leonard has since become a pariah among San Antonio sports fans. Many saw the young as the Spurs’ next star in the making.
Indeed, Spurs fans have had so much disdain for Leonard that Popovich took the Frost Bank Center’s announcers’ microphone during a game last season, demanding that fans stop booing Leonard while he was at the free throw line.
“It’s got no class,” Popovich told the crowd. “It’s not who we are.”
