Severe weather risk for Central Texas Sunday evening

Not everyone will see rain, but where storms form, some could be strong with wind or hail.
AUSTIN, Texas — We hadn’t been active for much of Sunday, but we are now tracking some strong storms making their way through the Hill Country that could eventually reach the I-35 corridor and cause issues for the Austin metro.
Timing for this will be around 8-8:30 p.m., before exiting out of the Coastal Plains by 10 p.m.

In these situations, it is very important to note that not everyone will see a strong storm.
However, if any storm were to pop-up, we’re tracking hail that could be large at times in isolated spots, as well as damaging winds.
As such, the Austin metro and points to the north and east have a 2 out of 5 “slight” risk for Sunday evening with the rest of the KVUE area under a marginal risk.

While we dry out for Monday and Tuesday, we’re tracking an even better chance for rain for Thursday and Friday, with Thursday night into early Friday morning being the bullseye period for the heaviest rain.

Judging by the latest (and rather drastic) shift in the American GFS model data from the past runs, there’s still quite a bit that needs to be hashed out in terms of totals. However, if this run of the GFS were to verify, we’d get somewhere between three to five inches of rain, which would make a gigantic dent in the drought situation in Central Texas.
However, the European model is only forecasting half an inch to one-and-a-half inches for Central Texas.

Thus, the Weather Prediction Center’s model, is now tracking between two to two-and-a-half inches, with the heaviest rain falling in the areas that need it most.

The KVUE Weather Team will continue to closely monitor this developing forecast.
Stay tuned for more updates, and as always, you can find the latest 7-day forecast below.
