HOUSTON — A water main break caused major issues on Yale Street at Center Street Thursday morning, according to Houston Public Works.

Public Works said a contractor that was not working for the city was installing a utility pole overnight when they hit the water main. The repairs could take several hours and will be slowed down by rain in the Houston area.

The contractor notified Public Works about the break around 2 a.m. The city said it is the contractor’s responsibility to fix the leak, but Public Works will inspect it to ensure it is done properly.

Water could be seen gushing into the streets early Thursday morning, impacting businesses and traffic in the area. Yale Street was shut down in both directions from Washington Avenue to south of Kohler Street.
