Texans can buy emergency preparation supplies tax-free April 26-28 ahead of severe weather season

Texans are expected to save $2.3 million during the emergency supplies tax break, which includes items like generators, fuel containers, and flashlights.
TEXAS, USA — With severe weather season approaching, Texans can buy emergency preparation supplies tax-free from April 26 to 28 during the state’s annual sales tax holiday.
The tax-free period begins at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, April 26 and ends at midnight Monday, April 28. Shoppers are expected to save approximately $2.3 million in state and local sales taxes, based on estimates from the Texas Comptroller’s office.
Approved by the Texas Legislature in 2015, the sales tax holiday allows consumers to buy qualifying items in stores or online without paying sales tax.
Eligible items include household batteries, fuel containers and flashlights priced under $75; hurricane shutters and emergency ladders priced under $300; and portable generators priced under $3,000.
“While we can’t know in advance when the next fire, flood, tornado or hurricane may occur, we can make sure our families, homes and businesses have the supplies they need to face these and other emergencies,” Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar said. “Don’t wait for disaster to strike. I’m encouraging Texans to take advantage of this tax holiday to save money while stocking up for emergency situations.”
Governor Abbott also urged residents to prepare ahead of hurricane season, which begins June 1.
“Having emergency supplies on-hand is one of the best ways Texans can keep themselves and their loved ones safe during emergency weather events,” Abbott said.
Delivery, shipping and handling fees count toward the total sales price and may affect an item’s eligibility. For example, a $299 emergency ladder ordered online with a $10 delivery fee would not qualify because the total cost exceeds $300.
Items that do not qualify include automobile and boat batteries, camping stoves, chainsaws, plywood, extension ladders, stepladders, and tents.
More information and a full list of qualifying supplies are available at the Texas Comptroller’s website.
