Flash flood threat; A day to be Weather Aware
CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
Today (Weather Aware Day)
The morning brought some light to moderate scattered rain showers but our chances for heavier rain will extend into the afternoon. Any strong thunderstorm will be moving slowly, which will elevate the flood threat on already primed soil. The Charlotte area has seen anywhere from 2-5″+ of rain over the last week, which helped alleviate some North Carolina drought pain, but now flash flooding is a real concern.
The best chance for a slow moving thunderstorm looks to be between noon and 6 p.m. according to the most recent HRRR run. This model updates every hour, giving us the best tool to predict upcoming rain and storms.
Temperatures will be much cooler today, only reaching the lower 80s on what will be an overall grey day. Expect a mostly cloudy sky to be the most optimistic outcome of the day. Not everyone will see heavy rain today, but those who do… need to be weather aware, especially if you live in a low lying or flood prone area.
The Evening
Expect some lingering rain and storms (especially for those southeast of Charlotte). Even when it is not raining it will still feel damp at times.
Friday
Areas of fog in the morning. Skies will be mostly cloudy with a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Highs will be in the low to mid 80s. Look for a few showers and storms in the evening with lows overnight in the low 70s.
Saturday-Sunday
Both days will be partly cloudy with highs in the low 80s. Look for a chance of scattered showers and a few thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening.
