Heavy rainfall over the past several days has resulted in widespread flooding across Johnston County, leading to road closures and disruptions to school schedules.

Rivers and streams have overflowed, causing significant flooding in various parts of the county.

As Hurricane Helene approaches southern Florida, additional rainfall is expected to bring more flooding. This could result in more road closures and delays for schools and drivers.

Local authorities, including Johnston County Emergency Services (EMS) have reported that several key roads are under water. Smith and Crantock roads are among the most affected, with officials asking drivers to avoid these areas due to the hazardous conditions.

Many drivers are being forced to find alternate routes, as floodwaters have made several roads impassable.

The flooding has not only disrupted roadways but has also impacted local schools. Johnston County Public Schools (JCPS) have announced delays for students.

In a Facebook post JCPS said:

“JCPS schools in the Four Oaks, Smithfield, Cleveland and West Johnston areas should expect delays and potential late arrivals due to the situation. JCPS Transpotation is currently working to assist buses as they navigate during this morning’s event.”

Johnston County officials are reminding the public of the dangers associated with flooding.

As always, the saying “Turn around, don’t drown” remains a critical reminder for those encountering flooded roadways.

It only takes a small amount of water to sweep away a vehicle, and residents are urged to avoid driving through any standing water.

As the rain continues, officials are asking residents to remain cautious, stay informed, and follow guidance from local authorities.

Johnston County is expected to see more rainfall in the coming hours, which could exacerbate flooding in already affected areas.
