Family credits divine intervention as tornado spares their home in Montgomery County
A family is grateful their home was spared while also feeling sorrow for those around them who lost everything.
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas — A family in Montgomery County is counting their blessings after narrowly avoiding devastation when a strong tornado moved through their community last weekend.
Emergency officials said hundreds of buildings were damaged and some were destroyed.
On Pickering Road in New Caney, a family is grateful their home was spared while also feeling sorrow for those around them who lost everything.
Sasha Zamora’s home was undamaged while her neighbor’s trailer was destroyed.
“I’ve never been through a tornado. This was crazy. It was so strong and it happened in seconds,” she said.
Zamora said she didn’t see the tornado, but she heard it coming. She said she grabbed her three children and took cover in the middle of their house.
“The rumble was so intense. The wind was strong,” Zamora said. “I grabbed the kids immediately. We had to take shelter, like, in the middle of the house.”
Zamora said the tornado passed over her home and continued on its path of destruction. Her neighbor’s trailer home was flipped upside down and left in shambles. A mother and her baby were inside at the time.
“We looked over out the window and then we see my neighbor’s mobile home flipped upside down,” Zamora said. “She was in a daze and had a big ol’ cut … her foot was broken, you could tell. It was crazy. I told her to get into my house. My house was spared, my house is fine.”
It’s been estimated that 302 buildings were damaged and 30 were destroyed. Montgomery County emergency officials said eight to 10 people were injured.
Zamora said she felt like angels were watching over her family.
“Everything is gone around me but the Lord spared my life — all my family — God Almighty literally had angels around me,” she said.
Energy companies are still working to restore the power in the neighborhood while the Texas Division of Emergency Management is conducting damage assessments in the area.
