A donation drive is being held for Walt Disney Elementary which suffered significant damage from an EF-2 tornado.
ALVIN, Texas — Drone video via Alvin ISD provided a new perspective on the aftermath of Saturday’s EF-2 tornado as the school district works to collect supplies.
“I’s a true celebration that it happened over break and we had no adults of children in that school,” said assistant principal Laura Chaffin.
She’s among those now heartened by the outpouring of support from those willing to help make sure a new replacement campus is ready to go in record time, including on New Year’s Eve.
“It has been so busy all day,” said Chaffin. “We’ve had people drop off all kinds of things.”
Leon Petty is from League City but saw what was needed in Alvin on the news.
“After I saw all the destruction that the tornado did, I mean, what else?” said Petty. “Everybody here has to come out and do their part, you know?”
He bought a bunch of supplies from Family Dollar while Pearland parent Amy Lopez turned to her sister.
She’s a teacher who recently relocated to the country of Panama.
“And she has all this stuff she can’t move to Panama,” said Lopez. “So I asked her and she’s like ”yes, donate it all,’ so all of her stuff has just been donated to Alvin ISD.”
Believe it or not, some items from even the most damaged rooms at Walt Disney are being salvaged. It’s all to help students and staff transition as easily as possible in a very uneasy time.
