Houston rapper Fat Tony loses home in devastating California wildfires
According to Fat Tony, his entire street in Altadena burned to the ground. He left behind vital documents, clothing, photos, and hard drives with his music.
HOUSTON — Houston native and independent rap artist Fat Tony, whose real name is Anthony Obi, is grappling with the destruction of his home and neighborhood in the devastating California wildfires.
Obi, originally from the Third Ward, said he initially prepared for high winds and potential power outages but never anticipated the fires would escalate so dramatically.
According to Obi, his entire street in Altadena has burned to the ground. He shared images of the charred remains of his home, which he evacuated with only a small bag of essentials. He left behind vital documents, clothing, cherished photos, and hard drives containing his music.
Obi said the experience is hauntingly familiar, recalling a house fire he endured as a child. Despite the loss, he is determined to remain composed.
“I feel like you have to keep it moving,” Obi said. “Tragedy has already struck. We’ve already lost everything. It isn’t really worth it for me to be negative in this situation. I’m just trying to stay as positive as possible and stay calm.”
The rapper also expressed heartbreak for his community, noting that many residents had lived in the area for decades and lost everything in an instant.
Grateful for the support of his fans and family, Obi said a GoFundMe campaign has been set up to assist him during this challenging time.
The wildfires, which have ravaged neighborhoods across the region, have left thousands displaced and caused widespread destruction.
