Galveston area under coastal flood advisory through Wednesday evening
The National Weather Service issued a coastal flooding advisory for the Galveston area through early Wednesday evening.
As Hurricane Michael pounded Florida, tides along the northern Texas coast were swelling onto land. The most noticeable flooding, according to NWS meteorologist Don Oettinger, was on Highway 87 around Bolivar Peninsula.
“Sometime during the day yesterday the water slowly came up, and by yesterday afternoon it wasn’t passable for a little while,” he said Wednesday afternoon. “It’s passable now.”
According to Oettinger, the flooding is partially due to Michael, and partially due to “strong eastern and southern winds for a couple days that push the water up.”
The flooding was expected to subside by 7 p.m. Wednesday.
