Weather Weekend: Heavy Rain, Possible Flooding Coming
Temperatures cooled off noticeably this week after a fairly strong cold front pushed through the region on Sunday. Lows in the upper 30s were common and highs barely made it out of the 50s on Tuesday. As we move toward the weekend, we could see our most significant rainfall in weeks.
Thursday should prove to be rather cloudy and cool with highs in the low 60s and lows not getting much below 50 thanks to the cloud cover. Southerly flow from the Gulf returns and humidity levels will be high. Additionally, that flow will bring a lot of moisture into the atmosphere setting up what looks to be a pretty significant rain event Friday night.
Friday will start cloudy with some light rain that should continue through most of the day. Temperatures will top out around 70 degrees. But as a cold front approaches from the north and a low pressure system moves into the area from the west, it is setting up to be a very wet evening.
The National Weather Service is calling for 2-4 inches of rain to be widespread with isolated areas of 6-8 inches possible. Unfortunately, there is no way to pinpoint exactly where the rain will be heaviest. It would appear at the moment that most of it will remain to the north of the city, but how far north and and specifically where the worst of it will be is uncertain.
We aren’t expecting any severe weather, just a lot of rain throughout the course of the night, which will undoubtedly lead to some street flooding, particularly in the later evening and early morning hours. So, if you can avoid being on the road late on Friday and into early Saturday morning, do it.
Fortunately, everything should clear out by Saturday morning and the skies will clear for some sunny and quite chilly weather. Saturday’s high will barely make it above 50 degrees and if you are tailgating for the Texans game on Sunday, expect clear, cold conditions in the upper 30s leading up to the noon start.
Once the rain is gone, it should be a lovely, albeit a bit cool, weekend.
