Family moves back into home 17 months after Hurricane Harvey

PASADENA, Texas — Hurricane Harvey seems like a long time ago, but some people are still dealing with its effects almost two years later.

One family whose home was almost destroyed received a happy ending to its 17-month nightmare.

“Muchas gracias, estoy muy emocional,” said Irene Salazar who owns the Pasadena home that flooded. “No tengo palabras.”

It took eight weeks for military veteran-run volunteer organization Team Rubicon to rebuild the house.

“From right here,” said Ronaldo Salazar as he points to a spot more than a foot up the wall from the baseboard. “Yeah the water was coming in from every doorway possible.”

Irene Salazar and her four children used buckets to get the water out of the house at the height of the storm on Aug. 27, 2017.

Salazar did not have flood insurance and did not get FEMA help to repair her home.

Her modest house now has new walls and floors, fresh paint and new appliances.

“Everything looks excellent,” said a Team Rubicon member translating for Salazar. “Not a hair out of place.”
