Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to outline hurricane preparedness as storm brews in Gulf

A tropical storm could develop in the Gulf of Mexico by Thursday, the National Hurricane Center says.

AUSTIN  — With the makings of a tropical storm brewing in the Gulf of Mexico,Gov. Greg Abbott is planning Texas’ response and is expected to offer details at a news conference on Wednesday.

Abbott will be in the state’s Emergency Operations Center in North Austin, where he led the state’s response to Hurricane Harvey two years ago, to meet with reporters.

The storm was off the Gulf Coast of Florida on Wednesday morning.

“Environmental conditions are conducive for development of this system, and a tropical depression is expected to form late today or Thursday while the low moves slowly westward across the northern Gulf of Mexico,” the National Hurricane Center said on its website Wednesday.
