Flooding threat, chilly winds will continue all Thursday

The Triangle remains under a flash flood watch for most of Thursday, while southern counties including Chatham, Cumberland, Robeson, Harnett and Hoke are under flood watches or warnings.

Counties southwest of the Triangle could see rain totals up to 5 inches by the weekend.

Most of this week’s heavy rain has been off to the west, prompting landslides and rescues in the mountains, but it’s expected to shift to the east Thursday, putting more of the area under risk for potential flooding.

The southern portion of the viewing area is under a Level 1 risk for severe weather Thursday.

“We could see some strong to severe storms,” said WRAL meteorologist Kat Campbell. “The biggest impact could be damaging wind gusts. Lightning and flooding will also be a concern. Everybody could see storms but the severe storms will likely be to the south.”

Rain chances will begin to subside Friday with a 20% chance of rain still possible Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures will begin to rise with it being in the low 80s this weekend and 77 on Memorial Day.

More than half of counties in the state are under a flash flood watch.
