Corpus Christi's council OKs plans to handle ongoing flooding in La Volla creek

City Council members hope two grants and matching city funds can help improve flooding problems at the La Volla Creek Drainage Basin on Corpus Christi’s Westside. 

The council on Tuesday accepted a Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery $7.2 million grant, as well as a Texas Division of Emergency Management $1 million grant.

It also appropriated matching funds of $8.6 million for the project from the stormwater capital improvements program. 

“The La Volla Creek Drainage Basin has been a priority project for the city for some time now,” City Manager Peter Zanoni said. “(This will) help to drastically improve drainage for the entire basin and especially the Las Colonias subdivision that includes several hundred homes.”

The council’s action Tuesday was its second and final vote. 

The project includes design and construction of four additional relief culverts at North Padre Island Drive to eliminate a current choke point.

It also encompasses design, land acquisition and construction of a 130-acre detention pond near the La Volla Creek and Airport Tributary, according to city documents.
