Gov. Greg Abbott will update Texans on the status of Hurricane Laura at noon Wednesday as the path continues to head toward eastern parts of Texas and southwest Louisiana.

The storm, which is the earliest “L” named storm on record, formed into a hurricane on Tuesday and is expected to make landfall overnight Wednesday.

Laura is expected to become a “major hurricane,” the National Hurricane Center said, and could be anywhere from a Category 3 to Category 4 storm.

“As many people know, it’s anticipated to be a Category 3 hurricane,” Abbott said Tuesday. “We need to be prepared for the possibility that it could increase to be a Category 4 hurricane.”

Greg Abbott and hurricanes

Abbott is no stranger to hurricane preparations or response. Abbott, who has been in office since 2015, led the state through 2017’s Hurricane Harvey, which slammed South Texas.

Abbott said Tuesday that Texas is ready to handle both the pandemic and a possible hurricane.

“We are responding to Hurricane Laura while also responding to a pandemic,” he told reporters at the state’s emergency command center in Austin. “We are not taking our eye off of what needs to be done to adequately respond to a pandemic.”
