Hurricane Laura heads toward Texas carry what forecasters say could be an “unsurvivable” storm surge.

AUSTIN — Gov. Greg Abbott provides an update on Texas’ preparations for Hurricane Laura at the State Operations Center on Wednesday.

During the briefing at 11:30 a.m., Abbott was told Laura’s winds had already reached 125 mph and were reaching well outside of the storm’s cone.

Abbott’s second briefing in as many days comes as more than half a million people in the path of the storm and its extended reach have been ordered to evacuate.

The National Hurricane Center said Laura has already intensified a “remarkable” amount in the past 24 hours.
