Tropical Depression 22 expected to be upgraded to Tropical Storm Beta on Friday

A Tropical Depression churning in the Gulf of Mexico is expected Friday to become the second storm named for the Greek alphabet during the 2020 hurricane season. 

According to the National Hurricane Center’s Friday morning update, Tropical Depression 22 was located about 250 miles southeast of the mouth of the Rio Grande. 

The storm is moving north-northeast near 7 mph, and it is expected to take a slow westward motion late Saturday or Saturday night.

The NHC forecasts the storm to strengthen over the next few days and become a tropical storm Friday, while nearing or reaching hurricane strength by Sunday. 

The coast of Texas and the Gulf Coast of Mexico are also expected to see increasing swells that are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions over the weekend, according to the NHC.
