Tropical Depression 22 upgraded to Tropical Storm Beta

A Tropical Depression churning in the Gulf of Mexico Friday became the second storm named from the Greek alphabet during the 2020 hurricane season. 

According to the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Depression 22 became Tropical Storm Beta Friday afternoon. The storm was located about 280 miles east-southeast of the Rio Grande at 4 p.m.

The storm is moving north-northeast near 9 mph, and it is expected to take a slow westward motion late Saturday or Saturday night.

The NHC says Beta could near hurricane strength by Sunday . 

The coast of Texas and the Gulf Coast of Mexico are also expected to see increasing swells that are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions over the weekend, according to the NHC.
