— A woman at Ocean Isle Beach is relieved her dog is back after a deadly tornado earlier this week.

Brittany Memory told WECT it sounded like a train was outside her window on Monday night. Her dog, Penny, started acting weird when the power went out during the rough weather.

“I actually thought someone was in the house, and I leaned up and turned on the flashlight on my phone,” Memory says. “And about that time it sounded like a train.”

The powerful twister lifted everything in Memory’s house and blew mirrors off walls. Penny, a Yorkshire Terrier, was picked up and carried out of the house. Fortunately, Penny returned home a few hours later. Penny was shaken, but otherwise unharmed.

The tornado was later ruled an EF-3 by the National Weather Service. At least three people died.

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office said the tornado touched down Monday in the area of Seaside Road and U.S. Highway 17 between 11:30 p.m. and midnight. It was on the ground for about 30 minutes.
