Several counties are also under a tornado watch until 9 p.m.

HOUSTON — We’re tracking the threat of severe weather across southeast Texas this afternoon and into tonight.

A tornado warning has been issued for Liberty, Polk and San Jacinto counties until 6:45 p.m.

There is currently a Tornado Watch in effect for Brazos, Chambers, Grimes, Harris, Montgomery, Polk, San Jacinto, Walker and Washington counties until 9 p.m.

We could see widespread rain, storms gusty winds and hail in parts of the area as a cold front makes its way to Houston.

The counties north and west of Harris County, like Austin, Montgomery, and Polk, are more likely to see the worst of the severe weather and could get as much as 2 inches of rain Friday evening.

Other areas should anticipate half an inch to an inch of rain, which is much needed after the drought-like conditions we have been experiencing.

No widespread flooding is expected but some areas may see some standing water from fast-falling rain.

WHAT TO EXPECT FRIDAY AND SATURDAY

  • Friday through 11 p.m. – In the counties north and west of Harris County, we have seen heavy shower activity, and some of those storms have produced small hail. Some of these areas could even see large, damaging hail and gusty winds. Signs of rotation are possible with any of those storms, but the chance of seeing a tornado develop are low for Harris County. North and east of Houston, there is a higher change of seeing storms with the capacity to produce a tornado. The tornado watch is up in effect until 9 PM tonight
  • Friday 9 p.m. – More widespread rain expected as the cold front pushes through the area from west to east.  Strong winds and heavy rain is expected as the front passes by downtown around 10.
  • Saturday 7 a.m. – Any scattered showers left will fade away by sunrise. Should see sunny skies and have a drier feeling in the air for the rest of the day. Sunday looks delightful!
